Position Summary:

This position is for a High Voltage Electrician within the Department of the Navy. The role involves installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing high voltage electrical systems and equipment, including transformers, capacitors, circuit breakers, and other components over 600V. This position is critical to maintaining the electrical distribution and power generation systems at military installations.

Key Duties:

  • Installation and Maintenance:
    • Install transformers, capacitors, lightening arrestors, circuit breakers, and other equipment for main distribution lines (over 600V).
    • Install and modify generation and distribution equipment in substations, power generation facilities, and transformer vaults.
  • Troubleshooting and Repair:
    • Troubleshoot and repair distribution circuits, generation, and control equipment to resolve outages and ensure proper operations.
    • Service electrical components in substations and power-generating facilities, including underground and above-ground systems.
    • Check the condition of transformers, switches, and cables, and perform emergency repairs as needed.

Conditions of Employment:

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Suitability for federal employment must be determined.
  • Participation in the direct deposit pay program is required.
  • New employees will undergo the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Selective Service Registration for males born after 12/31/59 is required.
  • Security Clearance: Must obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance.
  • Driver’s License: Must have a current valid U.S. driver’s license and be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Must pass a pre-appointment physical and annual exams.
  • Position requires travel, including to remote sites, via military and commercial aircraft.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as helmets, gloves, goggles, and respirators must be worn during work hours.
  • This is a Mission Essential position that requires maintaining operations during emergencies.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications (Screen-out Element):

Applicants must demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of a High Voltage Electrician without more than normal supervision. This includes the following tasks:

  1. Tool Usage: Proficiency in using tools and test equipment such as phase sticks, voltmeters, rotation meters, and fault finding equipment.
  2. Adjusting Electrical Equipment: Ability to adjust relays and control equipment for specific voltage, current, and operational functions.
  3. Electrical Testing: Using electrical tools to check continuity, resistance, voltage, and detect shorts.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Knowledge of electrical systems, including high voltage components and their proper installation and maintenance.
  • Skill in troubleshooting, repairing, and testing electrical circuits and equipment.
  • Ability to follow safety regulations, work in hazardous conditions, and use specialized electrical testing equipment.

Additional Information:

  • Shift Work: May require working nights, weekends, and holidays based on mission needs.
  • Overtime and "Call-back": Some positions may require overtime or "call-back" work hours.
  • Veterans’ Preference does not apply under this hiring authority, but veterans can still apply if eligible.
