Position Overview

Amazon is seeking aData Center Chief Engineer (CE)to lead the engineering operations of our data centers, ensuring the electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety systems are optimized for 100% availability. The CE will be responsible for maintaining high operational efficiency of mission-critical systems while providing top-tier customer service to internal teams. This role involves managing a team of Engineering Operations Technicians (EOT), handling emergency responses, performing preventative and corrective maintenance, and leading projects to enhance operational resilience and reduce costs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations and maintenance of mechanical and electrical systems within the data center.
  • Serve as the primary escalation point for all facilities-related issues, including performing root cause analysis and troubleshooting of equipment failures.
  • Operate independently with limited direct supervision, while providing technical leadership to a team of EOTs and coordinating with external vendors.
  • Manage and support small-to-medium scale projects, from planning and budgeting to execution and documentation.
  • Train and develop EOTs, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and best practices.
  • Create and implement standard operating procedures for engineering operations and vendor teams.
  • Ensure that all safety and operational procedures are followed and provide guidance to staff and third-party vendors.
  • Maintain and report on the performance of critical systems and generate reports for management.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work on uneven terrain, heights, and from ladders.
  • Lift and move up to 49 pounds regularly and participate in team lifts of 50 pounds or more.
  • Perform physical tasks for extended periods, including manipulating small wires and objects, and working in noisy or confined spaces.
  • Regularly bend, twist, reach, stretch, and move equipment into position.

Qualifications

Basic:

  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a data center environment.
  • At least 5 years of experience with mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Current, activeTop SecretUS Government Security Clearance.

Preferred:

  • Associate&rsquos or Bachelor&rsquos degree in a related engineering field, or equivalent mechanical/electrical trade experience.
  • Certifications such as DC II, DC III, or equivalent, and/or journeyman licenses in electrical or mechanical systems.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with CMMS systems, root cause analysis, and safety protocols.
