Rigger

Duties and Responsibilities

As a Rigger, you will:

• Perform all certifications and testing of ship gear.
• Manufacture various wire and fiber rope items, such as cargo nets, rope ladders, slings, standing and running rigging, lifting gripes, and towing gear.
• Operate forklifts and trucks to assist with job tasks.
• Safely place slings and spreader bars, as needed, to move equipment without damage.
• Ensure personnel remain clear of loads and crane envelopes/fall zones during lifts.

Requirements and Conditions of Employment

To qualify, applicants must:

• Be a U.S. Citizen.
• Be deemed suitable for federal employment.
• Participate in the direct deposit pay program.

• Hold or obtain a valid U.S. driver’s license.
• Complete a pre-employment physical examination and maintain health standards for job duties.
• Pass a pre-employment drug test, including for marijuana use, and comply with random drug testing requirements.
• Obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance before entrance on duty.
• Complete mandatory training, including obtaining a government travel credit card and Naval Crane Center training per NAVFAC P-307.
• Obtain and maintain the following certifications within specified timeframes:
  • Explosive Qualification/Certification from NWS Earle’s Qualification/Certification Board (within 30 days).
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (within 180 days).

Qualifications

Applicants must demonstrate:

• Basic mathematical knowledge to determine weights, stresses, and mechanical advantages for lifts.
• Experience selecting and installing weight-handling gear to lift, move, and position large, heavy objects.
• The ability to perform load-routing judgments based on size, shape, and location of objects.

• Relevant experience in trade or labor occupations as described in the 

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Physical Effort:

• Frequent reaching, climbing, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, standing, and walking for prolonged periods.
• Lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted, with occasional heavier loads requiring assistance or equipment.
• Use of chain saws and other cutting tools when tree trimming may be required.

Working Conditions:

• Work in all weather conditions with exposure to noise, vibration, dust, grease, and fumes.
• Risks of injury from electrical contact, swinging loads, breaking slings, and falling objects.
• Use of protective devices such as hard hats, gloves, safety shoes, and hearing protection is mandatory.
• Work may involve awkward and cramped positions, confined spaces, or hazardous conditions.

Additional Information

• A 40-hour work week is typical, but work may require call-backs, emergency overtime, and shift changes, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
