Job Description:

Amazon's Project Kuiper is an initiative to bring fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities across the globe. By launching a constellation of 3,236 low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, we aim to close the digital divide and enable reliable internet access worldwide. As part of this mission, we are looking for a Manufacturing Engineer to join the mechanical design team responsible for the development and integration of precision mechanical systems and components.

In this role, you will lead efforts to bridge the gap between design and production, ensuring that the manufacturing processes are scalable, efficient, and produce high-quality components that support the mission's success. You will be the voice of production within the design teams, providing insights into manufacturability and assembly requirements, while collaborating across departments to optimize the entire product lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design for Manufacture/Assembly: Partner with Design Engineering to optimize manufacturing processes for new designs. Lead Design for Excellence (DFX) activities and ensure smooth transition from design to production.

  • New Hardware Development: Drive the rapid revision and development of products. Address risks in both product design and manufacturability, ensuring stable and effective production designs through testing and validation.

  • New Design Realization: Oversee the transition of new designs into manufacturing, translating design specifications into scalable, production-ready solutions. Lead key activities like Failure Mode Effects and Analysis (FMEA), Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA/Gauge R&R), and Process Capability Studies (CPK) for pilot production runs.

  • Test Integration: Refine qualification and acceptance testing processes, integrating external resources (e.g., vendors, test teams, tooling groups) to deliver scalable and reliable testing methods.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Design Engineering, procurement, and production teams, managing the handoff from development to production, and supporting new product introduction.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Material Science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in developing and integrating manufacturing processes.
  • 5+ years of experience in developing complex hardware systems, ideally in the aerospace or spacecraft industry.
  • 3+ years of experience working in hardware test environments or laboratory test environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with NPI (New Product Introduction) methods in complex product development.
  • Strong proficiency in CAD tools (NX preferred).
  • Experience with DFMEA/PFMEA and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
  • Strong problem-solving and root cause analysis skills.
  • Experience supporting production development or building up new production areas.
  • Strong cross-organizational communication skills: ability to communicate clearly and persuasively in both verbal and written forms.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with industry developers to apply emerging technologies to mechanical designs.

Why Project Kuiper?

  • Mission-Driven Work: Be a part of a groundbreaking initiative that aims to connect the world with fast, affordable broadband via satellite technology.
  • Innovative Culture: Work with a world-class team that embraces new technologies and solutions to address complex challenges.
  • Career Growth: We offer mentorship and resources to help you grow professionally, with opportunities for learning and advancement.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: At Amazon, we embrace diverse experiences and perspectives, fostering a culture of inclusion.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Competitive Salary: The base pay for this role ranges from $128,600/year in the lowest geographic market up to $213,600/year in the highest market.
  • Total Compensation: Includes equity, sign-on bonuses, and comprehensive benefits such as medical, financial, and retirement plans.
  • Flexible Work Options: This position offers flexibility, but candidates must adhere to applicable export control laws and be eligible for a U.S. Government security clearance.
