Job Overview:

This position involves working as a Health Physicist within the Radiological Control Office, primarily focusing on dosimetry instrumentation, troubleshooting, and ensuring the safety and regulatory compliance of radiological operations. The role also involves preparing reports, analyzing data, and investigating any anomalies related to radiation exposure.

Duties:

  1. Dosimetry and Instrumentation:

    • Design, develop, and maintain complex dosimetry processing systems, software, and procedures.
    • Troubleshoot instrumentation issues and provide technical assistance for all equipment.
    • Investigate and document unusual dosimetry occurrences.
  2. Exposure Monitoring and Reporting:

    • Prepare and review personnel exposure reports on a regular basis.
    • Compile data and analyze trends to monitor equipment performance consistency and to ensure radiation safety.
  3. Radiological Safety Oversight:

    • Provide direction on radiological control and safety measures within the work environment.
    • Review and advise on the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) for safety during work assignments.
  4. Documentation and Compliance:

    • Ensure adherence to health physics, radiation health programs, and regulatory requirements.
    • Maintain and manage records related to radiological safety and dosimetry.

Requirements:

  1. Citizenship and Employment Eligibility:

    • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
    • Must be suitable for federal employment.
    • Must participate in direct deposit pay program.
  2. Physical and Travel Requirements:

    • Must pass a pre-appointment physical examination.
    • May require travel to both domestic (CONUS) and international (OCONUS) sites, potentially including remote or isolated locations.
    • Must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods.
  3. Health and Safety Requirements:

    • Will be required to wear personal protective equipment (e.g., helmets, gloves, respirators, safety shoes) during work shifts.
    • Must participate in medical surveillance programs to monitor health and safety exposure.
  4. Work Hours:

    • Position requires availability for uncommon tours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to support mission requirements.
    • May involve overtime, night differential pay, and/or unusual duty hours.

Qualifications:

GS-11:

  • Specialized Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the GS-09 level, demonstrating:

    • Ability to interpret complex technical data related to Health Physics and Radiation Health programs.
    • Experience managing records, developing procedures, and investigating anomalies.
    • Experience preparing reports, conducting analyses, and ensuring environmental compliance.
    • Experience managing radiological emergencies and taking action to minimize the impact.
  • Education Substitution: A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, may substitute for experience.

GS-09:

  • Specialized Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the GS-07 level, demonstrating:

    • Experience assisting with managing radiological records, procedures, and safety programs.
    • Ability to help with preparing reports, analyzing data, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
    • Experience assisting in radiological emergency calculations and executing proper safety actions.
  • Education Substitution: A master's or equivalent graduate degree, or 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education, may substitute for experience.

Basic Education Requirements:

  • Degree in natural science or engineering that includes at least 30 semester hours in areas like health physics, radiological science, engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, or mathematics.

  • Combination of Education and Experience:

    • Courses in health physics or related fields, combined with appropriate experience or certification by the American Board of Health Physics.
    • If applicable, education must be supported with transcripts or an itemized list of college courses.
