Duties:

  • Serve as legal counsel providing advice and legal support to senior Marine Corps leadership and commands across the western United States.
  • Practice in areas including Civilian Personnel Law (CPL), Acquisition and Fiscal Law, Environmental and Land Use Law, and Installations Law.
  • Advise on legal matters such as Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) issues, Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB) cases, bid protests, contract disputes, environmental compliance, and more.
  • Represent the Marine Corps in legal forums such as the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and the Armed Services Board of Contract Appeals (ASBCA).
  • Provide strategic legal advice on federal contracting, environmental litigation, real estate leases, and business law.

Requirements:

Conditions of Employment:

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Must participate in the Direct Deposit pay program.
  • Occasional travel required.
  • Ethics orientation and financial disclosure report required.
  • Successful completion of E-Verify check for employment verification.
  • Must complete mandatory training and obtain a government credit card for travel purposes.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Must possess a J.D. or LL.B. from an American Bar Association-accredited law school.
  • Experience:
    • GS-11: At least one year of professional legal experience or top third law school class standing, law review experience, or moot court competition achievements.
    • GS-12: Two years of recent professional legal experience or be a current GS-12 (or equivalent) in the federal government.
    • GS-13: Over two years of relevant legal experience.
    • GS-14: At least three and a half years of relevant legal experience.

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience with Government Standards of Conduct, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), and Privacy Act.
  • Familiarity with Department of the Navy (DON) legal practices is a plus but not required.

Applicants will be evaluated based on:

  1. Depth and relevance of legal experience in the practice areas listed.
  2. Strength of research, writing, oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
  3. Ability to work independently and in team settings.
  4. Ability to establish strong attorney-client relationships and respond creatively in fast-paced environments.

Required Documents:

  • Cover letter addressing the evaluation criteria and interest in the position.
  • Current resume with relevant experience and dates of employment.
  • Two legal writing samples (max 10 pages each, no older than 10 years).

Additional Information:

  • The position may be subject to Department of Defense and Department of the Navy policies regarding the employment of retired military members within 180 days of retirement.
  • If selected, a tentative offer will be rescinded if the pre-employment requirements are not met.
