The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing the electrical, mechanical, and HVAC systems that support Amazon's data centers, ensuring high availability and minimal downtime (better than 99.999% uptime). This hands-on role will require troubleshooting and maintaining complex systems, while managing the operations of facilities and supporting technical teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the operation and maintenance of critical physical infrastructure, including electrical, mechanical, and HVAC systems.
  • Oversee electrical support equipment such as generators, UPS systems, PDUs, batteries, and related systems, as well as mechanical systems like CRAC units, chillers, air handlers, pumps, and cooling towers.
  • Lead and manage teams of 24x7 engineering technicians in maintaining and troubleshooting systems, ensuring they meet service level agreements (SLAs).
  • Engage in improvement projects from concept to completion, often collaborating with third-party vendors to ensure service adherence.
  • Manage operations budgets and expenditures effectively to optimize costs while maintaining high system performance.
  • Respond to after-hours emergency calls and take on on-call duties, managing investigations and recovery efforts for system issues.
  • Ensure that all tasks performed in the data center are done to the highest quality, with no impact to internal or external customers.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in varied environments including heights, ladders, and noisy areas.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 49 pounds regularly and participate in team lifts of 50 pounds or more.
  • Comfortable with performing physically demanding tasks throughout the workday, including bending, reaching, and working in tight spaces.

Qualifications

Basic:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent practical experience.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a management position, leading a team of 5 or more direct reports.
  • At least 3 years of experience working in data centers with an emphasis on building and equipment operation.
  • U.S. Citizenship and an active Top Secret (TS/SCI) security clearance are required.

Preferred:

  • In-depth knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems for data center operations, including transformers, UPS systems, generators, ATS units, chillers, CRAC units, and air handling systems.
  • Proven track record in managing and developing teams, troubleshooting technical issues, and solving problems at their root.
  • Ability to meet SLAs through proactive issue detection and resolution.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to prioritize effectively in a fast-paced, complex environment.
  • Ability to take ownership of issues and collaborate with support teams for resolution.

Yes, when referring to the job title "Facility Manager," the first letter is capitalized, making it "Facility Manager." However, if it's part of a sentence, such as "This person is a facility manager," then it is not capitalized.

To become a Facilities Manager, typically, you should have a bachelor's degree in a related field such as business, facilities management, or engineering. Gaining experience in related roles, such as maintenance, project management, or real estate, is also beneficial. A Facility Manager is not typically a Plant Manager. While both roles may involve overseeing operations, a Plant Manager is specifically responsible for the day-to-day activities of a manufacturing plant, whereas a Facility Manager is responsible for the overall maintenance, upkeep, and management of a building or group of buildings.

In facility management, FMP stands for Facility Management Professional. It's a designation given by the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) to individuals who have demonstrated a high level of knowledge and expertise in the field of facility management. This includes areas such as real estate, finance, human factors, technology, sustainability, and law.
