Duties and Responsibilities

The position will be filled at the GG-07 grade level, with potential non-competitive advancement upon meeting developmental benchmarks and performance requirements.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting Federal Personnel Background Investigations, many of which are sensitive or controversial, involving vague or adverse information.
  • Evaluating individuals' trustworthiness for:
    • Access to classified information.
    • Placement in sensitive positions.
    • Retention in military services or Federal employment.
  • Collecting and developing information from diverse sources.
  • Preparing investigative reports following Department of Defense (DoD) guidelines.

Requirements

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must be registered with Selective Service.
  • Subject to drug testing.
  • Flexible tour of duty; occasional overtime may be required.
  • Must successfully complete the Federal Background Investigator Training Program (FBITP) or Field Investigator Accession Training (FIAT).
    • Failure to pass written and practical tests will result in removal from the position.
  • This is not a law enforcement position (no firearms or hazard pay).

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education OR
  • Specialized experience equivalent to GG-05 level:
    • Conducting personnel background research.
    • Reviewing and verifying accuracy of technical documents (e.g., employment applications, credit/police reports).
    • Identifying discrepancies and applying regulations to resolve issues.
    • Interviewing personnel and preparing detailed reports.

Additional Notes

  • This position falls under the Defense Civilian Intelligence Personnel System (DCIPS) in the Excepted Service.
  • Applicants must submit transcripts for education qualification and other necessary documents (e.g., SF-50).
  • Veterans' preference is not applicable for candidates with prior Federal service meeting specific criteria.
  • Selected candidates may be required to serve a two-year trial period.
