A dental hygienist is a healthcare professional who works alongside dentists to provide oral health care services. They clean teeth, examine patients for signs of oral diseases such as gingivitis or cavities, and educate patients on proper oral hygiene techniques. They may also apply fluoride and sealants to help prevent tooth decay.

A dental hygienist is primarily trained to clean human teeth. They do not typically clean animal teeth. However, there are specialized veterinary dental technicians who perform this role for animals.

A dental hygienist can perform routine cleaning procedures on teeth, such as scaling and polishing, under the supervision of a dentist. However, they cannot perform advanced procedures that require a dentist's expertise, such as fillings or root canals.

Yes, a dental hygienist performs deep cleaning procedures, also known as scaling and root planing, to remove plaque and tartar from below the gum line to prevent and treat gum disease.

To become a Dental Hygienist in Melbourne, Australia, you typically need to complete a Bachelor of Oral Health (Dental Hygiene) or an Associate Degree in Oral Health (Dental Hygiene) from a recognized university. Additionally, registration with the Dental Board of Australia is required, which involves meeting certain academic, English language, and character requirements. It's recommended to check the latest requirements on the Dental Board of Australia's website.

This certificate allows them to practice dental hygiene under the supervision of a dentist.

Yes, a patient can see a dental hygienist without first seeing a dentist. Dental hygienists are responsible for cleaning teeth, taking x-rays, and providing educational information about oral health. However, they cannot perform certain procedures that require a dentist's prescription. It's important to consult with a dentist regularly for check-ups and more complex dental issues.

Dental hygienists are in demand due to the growing importance of oral health and preventive dental care. With an increasing awareness of the link between oral health and overall health, the need for dental hygienists to perform routine cleanings, educate patients on oral hygiene, and provide preventive care has become essential. Additionally, an aging population with more complex dental needs also contributes to the demand for dental hygienists.
