Yes, a career as a Platform Engineer can be rewarding. It offers opportunities to work on complex systems, collaborate with various teams, and stay updated with the latest technologies. The role often involves problem-solving, automation, and ensuring the smooth operation of software platforms, which can lead to high job satisfaction and growth potential.

While there is some overlap, a Platform Engineer and a DevOps Engineer are not exactly the same role. A Platform Engineer is primarily focused on building, maintaining, and scaling the infrastructure that developers use to build and deploy their applications. On the other hand, a DevOps Engineer is responsible for bridging the gap between development and operations, focusing on the automation of software development and deployment processes, as well as monitoring and improving system performance.

A platform engineer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the underlying systems, frameworks, and software that enable applications to run effectively. This includes managing servers, databases, and network infrastructure.

Platform engineers are IT professionals who design, build, and maintain the underlying technology infrastructure for software applications. They ensure the smooth operation of a platform, which includes servers, databases, and other systems, to support the development, testing, and deployment of software.

A Platform Engineer's salary can vary greatly depending on factors such as location, experience, and industry. On average, in the United States, a Platform Engineer can earn between $90,000 and $140,000 per year. However, this range can be higher or lower in other regions and for more senior roles. For the most accurate information, it's recommended to research salary data specific to your location and experience level.

While there is some overlap, platform engineering is not necessarily the "new DevOps." Both roles focus on infrastructure and tooling, but platform engineering often involves a broader scope, including building and maintaining the underlying systems and platforms that developers use to build and deploy applications. DevOps, on the other hand, is more focused on the collaboration and communication between development and operations teams to improve the software development lifecycle. So, while they share similarities, they are not exactly the same.
